The real story here is that with the demise of the elected mayor the 60 city councillors must now elect one of their number as leader of the city council and, because of the make up of the current council (a split mixture of BNP, Labour, Conservatives and right-leaning independents) a likely outcome is the odious leader of the BNP group.
If that happens, it really will be a first. And not a good one. If anything is a warning that this is what happens when people don’t use their vote (less than one in five turned out), this is it. Be warned. Remember your rights are not guaranteed. And pity the poor Potteries.
