First-grade students from the Creativity Arts Charter School, San Francisco attended the lesbian wedding of their teacher on Friday.

The trip caused a stir amongst same-sex marriage opponents, despite the fact that the idea for the trip was proposed by a parent of a student.

In November, Californian citizens will vote on Proposition 8 of the state constitution, which will decide whether or not gay marriage remains legal in the state.

If the proposition is rejected, gay marriage will retain its legal status.

Chip White, press secretary for the Yes on 8 campaign, told the San Francisco Chronicle:

“It’s just utterly unreasonable that a public school field trip would be to a same-sex wedding.

“This is overt indoctrination of children who are too young to have an understanding of its purpose.”

The interim director of the Creative Arts Charter School Liz Jaroslow was not deterred. She told the newspaper:

“It really is what we call a teachable moment. I think I’m well within the parameters.”
