“Our work reviewed studies of the mental health of lesbian, gay and bisexual people, and sadly, those studies showed that it is people (not behaviour) that are discriminated against, and not least by religious groups and organisations.
“Discrimination on the grounds of sexuality is even more devastating than other forms of discrimination such as racism, as it reaches right into families and leaves no refuge for its victims”
Bet that wasn’t quoted in the reported on the Fundamentalist Christian news websites. How insidious this discrimination is?
Christian groups are not exactly renowned for their grasp or respect of science and its studies… their attempt to torch Galileo is a template for these blind fools as to what they think of those who see the truth.
About time. It’s good to see professional people make a robust statement like this, to counter the propaganda that spews from religious quarters..
To back up the professor’s conclusion that discrimination is at the heart of the problem, similar studies into the black community arrived at the same conclusion ie. discrimination explained a preponderance of mental illness (particularly schizophrenia) in black people. I would hope Dr Fitzgibbons would not stretch to suggesting that being black is a disorder.
And in view of what has been said by the Catholic Medical Association, readers might want to enquire of their own doctor or counsellor whether they are a member of this weird religious cult. How could you trust such a person to deal properly with your health?
These fundamentalist operatives are identical to the ex-gay ministries who espouse this bile and distort science to advance their agenda of lies, hate and intolerance. Well done Professor King for exposing the frauds that they are.
