Conference blog: Scarecrow and the Tin Man make an appearance in Manchester

It seems half of central Manchester has been fenced in to accommodate the Labour conference. Inside the cavernous space of Manchester Central, a former railway terminus, scores of organisations have stalls.

Alongside the usual suspects such as the trades unions, Labour Students and the Fawcett Society are some odditites.

The Acropolis, for example. Yes, the one in Athens. They have a stall at conference this year, alongside internet giant YouTube and the formidable Bolivia Information Forum.

“The Future is Knowsley” proclaims one stand.

Labour Friends of Iraq is another, but even it cannot compete with the eye-popping Tameside Metropolitan Borough, which has a Wizard of Oz theme, complete with lifesize figures from the movie, all topped with a rainbow.

From a distance it looks like the gayest stall ever. Click here for pics.

I assumed it was LGBT Labour – their fund to encourage more gay and lesbian people to stand as parliamentary candidates is called Dorothy’s List.

It seems that I misheard a passionate GMB delegate’s speech to conference. His constant references to rent boys were infact references to Remploy, the employment service for disabled people.
