Lance Bass has said that if he danced with a man on US hit show Dancing With The Stars it would overshadow the event.

The openly gay former ‘N Sync star will compete in the show with a female partner, ending speculation that he would become part of the first the first same-sex pair to compete.

“I think it would be so silly that it would just overshadow everything else going on,” he told E! Online.

“It would just be like making fun of something. Bit if it was another show with all guys dancing and all girls dancing, that’s a different story. I think that’s sexy.”

The boy band singer opened up about his sexual orientation in an interview with People magazine in 2006, claiming he felt under pressure to keep it a secret to so not to “overpower everything.”

His appearance on the ratings hit Dancing With The Stars as the first ever openly gay participant is “important” he said.

“My biggest concern is I just hope it doesn’t hurt the gay community in any way because, you know, we definitely can be scrutinised and picked apart.

“I definitely feel a responsibility of making sure I represent well.”

Lance, 29, claimed he was the worst dancer in ‘N Sync, who were active from 1995 to 2002 and sold more than 28 million albums in the US alone.

Justin Timberlake has been the most successful since the band went on “hiatus.”

“The guys always told me how terrible of a dancer I am, so I kind of just wanted to prove to myself that I could learn something crazy,” Lance told E! Online.

“Also my grandmother and mother love the show, so I wanted to do something for them.”
