Bad taste gay comedy comes to the UK

An American TV show described as making “South Park look like The Flumps” is to be screen on E4 this week.

Rick and Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in the World features a range of gay and lesbian stereotypes, from the twink with the sugar daddy to the “perfect” gay couple of the title, to baby-obsessed lesbians.

The odd Lego-like characters tackle what one commentator called “horribly inappropriate homo gags.”

Lesbian Kirsten asks Filipino-American Rick to father her baby, much to the disgust of his “Abercrombie and Fitch muscle queen” boyfriend Steve.

The 22-minute stop-motion series of six episodes has been recommissioned by American gay and lesbian channel Logo.

GayWired.com’s Ross von Metzke raved about the show when it debuted last year:

“It’s every stereotype gay ghettos across the world perpetuate times 100, and while it’s not likely to win over many fans to gay lib from the straight side of the fence, for our community, it’s a home run,” he said.

“Rick and Steve have troubles of their own, their relationship is stale and, like most gay couples going through a mid life crisis a decade before the rest of the world’s men, they seek out a third but strike out, Rick fears, ‘because I’m Asian.’

“19-year-old circuit queen Evan (“Some people don’t give me enough credit for how smart I … Ohmygod! I loooove this song!”) and his 50-year-old, HIV-positive boyfriend Chuck, who begs Evan not to sleep with anyone else after he dies, even though he’s already sleeping with other people now.”

Rick And Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple In All The World, Wednesday 17 September 10.30-11.00pm, E4
