Cumming to America: Alan Cumming to become a US citizen
Scottish actor Alan Cumming has decided to take American citizenship, and said he hopes to vote for Barack Obama in November’s Presidential election.
Speaking at the Democratic National Convention last week the X-Men star said he is taking a citizenship test next month and is confident he will pass.
“I’ve got the questions and the answers,” he said.
“Now all I’ve got to do is memorise them. It’s just like learning a lot of lines, so I kind of think that as an actor, I’ll be better prepared than most.”
Sample questions from the test, available on the internet, include: when is the last day you can send in federal income tax forms?, what did Susan B Anthony do? and why does the flag have 13 stripes?
Alan Cumming entered into a civil partnership with American illustrator Grant Shaffer at a ceremony in London in 2007.
The 43-year-old Scot, who has a successful career in Hollywood and on Broadway, had his first taste of fame in soap opera Take the High Road.
He went on to star in camp comedy classic, The High Life, which he co-wrote and wrote and perfromed the theme tune. Cumming is a well-respected stage, screen and television actor.
He is best known for performances in the Spy Kids films and as Nightcrawler in X-Men 2, where he starred alongside Sir Ian McKellen.
Cumming is an active campaigner for gay rights: he is bisexual, and was married for eight years.
