Manchester Pride 2008 will begin on Friday 15th August with a range of events across the city.

Events include ‘My First Pride’ at Urbis, an exhibition documenting 18 years of ‘first timers’ at Pride; ‘Military Pride’ at Imperial War Museum North, a display of how war has affected LGBT lives; and ‘The Lost Dresses of Travilla’, an exhibition of dresses by William Travilla, held at the Palace Hotel.

There will also be a focus on history with the ‘Out in the Past Heritage Trail’ on 22nd-24th August.

This will explore over 200 years of lesbian and gay history, starting at Manchester’s Tourist Information Centre.

This year’s Manchester Pride boasts true variety in its calendar, with such diverse events as: the Pink Dog Show (‘the best dressed dog in pink’), Manchester Village Cheerleading workshop, a performance by Prairie Dogs line dancers, self development sessions, Gay City Rollers, a rollerdisco night, and ‘The Speed of Dating’, comedy play by Sarah Evans.

The 18th anniversary of Manchester Pride promises performances by several popular musicians.

Boy George will DJ at the main stage on Friday 22nd August; Sophie Ellis Bextor will perform on Saturday 23rd; Electronic band Client are scheduled to play on Sunday 24th; and Copenhagen pop outfit Alphabeat, 4 Poofs and a Piano and Heather Small will wow the crowds on Monday 25th.

Jackie Crozier, festival manager of Manchester Pride, said:

‘I’m so pleased with the diverse range of events on offer this year.

‘Manchester Pride is more than just the Big Weekend; it is a cultural event that ticks every box.

‘There really is something for everyone and I’m more than confident that the events will be a great success across the board.’
