FYI Radio, a LGBT youth user-generated radio station, has been awarded £4,000 from the European Youth in Action programme.

Founded in 2004, the station works with young people and professionals aged 16 to 30 to facilitate debate, and provide a platform to play new music and promote new and recognised talent.

The European Youth in Action programme is run in the UK by the British Council as part of its Youth Initiative scheme.

FYI Radio plans to use the money to overhaul its website and develop user-generated content.

“This money is really going to help the show – in the new series we hope to bring a live audience to the recordings.

“FYI is a great platform for new artists and we’re looking forward to finding out the views and thoughts of young queer Londoners.” said FYI radio director Ryan Haynes.

Currently they broadcast podcasts through scheduled shows that are available for download from the websites iTunes and Podango.

Show content varies from regular features like LGBT Jargon Buster and Youth News to one-off shows such as Queer Theory, the Pink Pound and Coming Out.

Having already produced two series, the next will spice things by inviting a live audience to discuss current affairs with guests.

The programme is looking for people under 30 to participate as part of the show’s audience and guests, be it a band, artist, politician, volunteer, designer, entrepreneur or activist.

Individuals and groups can also produce their own podcasts to be submitted as part of the online radio streaming output to be launched in September.

The autumn launch will announce key influencers and media supporters of the project and provide a three-month programme schedule.

FYI Radio is still looking for funding to help turn the pre-record podcast format to a full-time streaming station created and maintained by the LGBT youth community.
