This is no surprise to anyone – the Archbishop’s views on same-sex partnerships have been known since long before he was appointed to St Augustine’s Throne. In his Oxford and Cambridge days he was famous as a liberal, and he spoke very movingly as a voice of reason at the infamous 1998 Lambeth Conference. This is not a news story at all.
The real question is: why is this coming out now? Who thinks it is in their interests to cast the Archbishop in a controversial light and possibly discredit his attempts to hold the Communion together? If you scan the ‘liberal’ Anglican blogs, you’ll see a lot of speculation on this question. Conservative groups failed to get what they wanted out of Lambeth, and it’s pretty much an open secret that these conservative groups have close links to the Times newspaper, which broke this story. For those with eyes to see, it’s not too hard to put together the missing pieces.
Why is this coming out now? I imagine it’s to reveal this disgusting man as what he is – a turncoat, a toady, and someone prepared to betray his principles for worldly advancement.
He makes me sick. I prefer men like Archbishops Akinola and Orombi, who at least are honest, genuinely believe in something and say what they think.
Tony Grew got it wrong. Williams has NEVER supported gay marriage, moreover marriage equality which is what it should be called, not even the British government, but gay relationships, huge difference. If Williams had supported marriage equality, the UK would be the 7th country to offer it. Civil Partnerships are NOT marriages either, lets get facts straight. Until the government recognises them as such, they will always remain legal same-sex relationships, nothing more.
I am surprised at the way Pink News has chosen to reoport this, as though it is real news. Why has it been taken in by such an obvious stunt ? I have less respect for Pink News as a result
