  1. I wouldn’t be too quick to imply that homophobia is behind the chattering classes’ distaste. Helen Garner is also queer, yet I haven’t heard any complaints about her being on the list.

    your headline makes it sound as if the being gay part is at the core of the controversy when actually it’s about whether a thriller should be eligible for a literary prize. (the discussion elsewhere conveniently forgets brian moore’s “lies of silence” which was shortlisted in 1990 – i would call that a thriller)

    i look forward to reading “Child 44″ in my Booker readathon and making up my own mind about it.
