The gay community in the Foyle region of Northern Ireland will celebrate Pride next month with an “Iris Robinson tribute.”

The six day festival will also feature the return of some the biggest events on last year’s programme, ‘Rock for Pride @ Sandinos’ and ‘The Silver Tongued Devils.’

Pride, which runs from 18th to 24th August, culminates with a bank holiday weekend party with The Blue Notes, Quire, DJ Lexius, the Freedom Awards and special guest Amy Lame and ‘Pom Poms for Peace.’

“This year’s festival has generated huge interest from around the country and beyond partially due to the unwarranted hatred being spouted by certain politicians,” organisers said.

“There will be an appearance by some of the BBC Radio Foyle folks with an Iris Robinson tribute.”

The DUP MP and member of the Northern Ireland Assembly has been accused of “adding more fuel to the fires of prejudice and bigotry” by Derry-based Rainbow Project, Northern Ireland’s only health project for gay and bisexual men.

Mrs Robinson has courted controversy in the two months since her husband Peter became First Minister.

During a BBC Radio Ulster interview in June the MP for Strangford offered to introduce gay men to a “Christian psychiatrist” who could make them heterosexual.

She has refused to modify her position that homosexuality is vile, wicked and an abomination, based on her Biblical beliefs.

It emerged earlier this month that in June, during a House of Commons committee discussion on the assessment and management of sex offenders, Mrs Robinson said:

“There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality, than sexually abusing innocent children.”

She claims that she meant that child abuse is worse than homosexuality.
