  1. Iris Robinson…MP,MLA, and Chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee has described on radio today her abhorrence, disgust, revulsion etc etc for homosexuality! Is it any wonder when such a high profile politician, whose husband the future 1st Minister responsible for the Equality agenda….that there are attacks on members of the gay community, that young gay men and women find it difficult to accept themselves or their place in society….It is appauling that someone in public office can retain her retain that position, uttering thes type of statements.

If these self-proclaimed Christians really believed in God, they wouldn’t blaspheme by suggesting that another human creature would be a subordinate in a relationship. “Helpmeet,” indeed. It takes two.

  3. She talks about a psychiatrist when it is clearly she who is mentally ill. Religious faith is a mental illness, and this woman is suffering from a serious form of this illness.

  4. elizabethveldon 6 Jun 2008, 4:51pm

    What a humanatarian

  5. Edward in Los Angeles 6 Jun 2008, 5:23pm

Ahhh, so you have bigots armed with psychiatrists in Ireland too huh?

  6. elizabethveldon 6 Jun 2008, 5:26pm

    they’re everywhere Edward.

  7. typical fundie ignorance: “helpmeet” isn’t a word – I believe the quote is “as a help MEET for thee”, i.e. a help appropriate…

    Fundie fail!

Oh and by the way she’s a bitch who has too much power, probably by her proximity to power. An true Xian women do not preach to men, so she’s a hypocrit as well!!

  8. Molly, NYC 6 Jun 2008, 6:23pm

She’s chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee? Seriously?

I suppose it’s nice to know that we’re not the only country with these loons in the government.

  9. she claims to love everyone, and to love sinners while hating the sin.

i’d like to see her come to some sort of harm to be honest

  10. Bill Perdue, RainbowRED 6 Jun 2008, 7:16pm

There are three right wing parties in England and its remnant colony in northern Ireland and it’s hard to tell which of them is more bigoted.

Is it the Tories who oppose reproductive rights for lesbians and measures to curb violence due to hate speech? And remember the Tories are rabid islamophobic racists. Or is it the BNP, the little piglets who put the neo in neo-fascist? They hate GLBT folks and immigrants. Or is the DUP whose gangs of fanatic bully boys ran amok in a decades long terror campaign egged on by the Paisleys. Their hatred of the GLBT communities is palpable and based on christist superstition.

I think the only solution is for PinkNews to poll its readers and the GLBT communities at large. Then we can decide which of these three reactionary parties should be our target at election time.

  11. nick straw 6 Jun 2008, 7:45pm

Mmm Mrs Robisinson you narowminded bigoted small minded homophobic individual, why not keep your opinion to yourself, i hope one of your children comes out as Gay anmaybe you could you could get them some electro – therapy or burn them at the stake ? go back to the dark ages you stupid woman

  12. David Davis 6 Jun 2008, 8:17pm

Who is this pyschiatrist who has been “treating” homosexuals anyways? Can’t he be struck off?

  13. Chris - Dundonald, Co. Down 6 Jun 2008, 8:28pm

I have the misfortune of living about 400yds from Iris Robinson and her husband the 1st minister, and about 50yds from her husbands mother. In years gone by they have both appeared at my front door at election time canvassing. I always thought Peter was a bit shifty, and found his wife to be thoroughly repulsive in character!
After her latest comments, I shall be writing to her and her husband and informing them that should Mrs Robinson ever knock on my door again, I will take great pleasure in escorting her off the property, using what I believe the police call “reasonable force”, otherwise known as a smack in the gob!
I should know better by now, but yet I am still stunned that there are still people who believe sexuality is a choice and that you can be “reprogrammed”. As Neville commented, I think its her who needs the psychiatrist!

  14. William - Dublin 6 Jun 2008, 8:28pm

What a fool this woman must be, and what an insult to the education system that she believes in “homosexual cures” and the Adam & Eve claptrap.

Its a real pity this woman doesn’t go get cured for her unforgivable stupidly.

The sooner Ireland rids itself of people like this waste of cells, the better off the whole island will be.

  15. Robert, ex-pat Brit 6 Jun 2008, 9:39pm

The American Psychiatric Association as far back as 1973 removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. Further, it also refutes ex-gay ministries who claim they can convert gays to straights. None of their ministries have provided any documentation or conducted extensive studies or experiments and not one word has been published in any of the legitimate medical or scientific literature. They believe simply in praying away the gay and using aversion therapy.

This witch Robinson is the one who needs therapy, permanently. But what can you expect from the DUP, its a party that engenders hatred, intolerance but also produces some of the sickest, pyschotic people that one can imagine. About time these people were taken to task. What she is doing is tantamount to creating an environment of contempt, hatred and incitement to commit violent crimes against gay men and women. What an evil bitch!

  16. I think it’s an absolute disgrace, anyone reading this should send an e-mail of complaint to the DUP party:

  17. Its unbelievable that such an uneducated woman can be allowed to portray her views on National Radio. Her views should be kept personal. She does not speak for the people of Northern Ireland. Lets hope the investigation into Parliamentary Expenses looks at her accounts in detail. She has the highest office expenses.

  18. This kind of hate filled Christian nonsense it totally what you would expect from fanaticslike her. It is a real shame there will not eventually be a hell for her to go to.

  19. Edward in Los Angeles 7 Jun 2008, 5:09am

Email the woman and her superiors and let her know that, in the immortal words of Paddy Chayefsky’s “Network”, “we’re mad as hell as we’re not going to take this anymore”. List of email addresses for the Health, Social Services and Public Safety Statutory Committee: , , , , ,, , , and

  20. I am always amazed to find out that some people still hold these prehistoric views. But to find them in positions of power, legislating over the rest of us…what does that say about the loonies who elected her?

  21. sightunseen 7 Jun 2008, 2:18pm

This Ms. Robinson reminds me of Ms. Sally Kern, a pol from Oklahoma, usa. Both of these fine women are reaching out and hoping to inflame the passions of murder in the hearts of their constituents. Aren’t they special?

  22. Robert, ex-pat Brit 7 Jun 2008, 3:12pm

Sightunseen, yes it does remind me of Sally Kern. The trouble with these socalled zealot “christians” is that its ok for them to denigrate our lives, villify us, utter hateful things that can often give tacit consent to committing crimes against us or discriminate against us even though its now illegal, yet when we bash back, they cry blood, that we’re offending their religious beliefs and mocking religion. Well…ho hum! These lunatics can’t have it both ways, and its about time they realised that nobody is above the law. They bash us, we bash back with impunity! What’s good for the goose is good for the gander! Free speech shouldn’t be for some and not for others when it comes to personal attacks an an entire group of people. That’s the problem with state religion, it has far too much to say and meddles in politics where it has no right to. The hierarchy pays next to no taxes and should keep their mouths shut. One way to resolve it is to disestablish state religion once and for all and let them fend for themselves, and go find real jobs.

  23. terry dactyl 7 Jun 2008, 8:56pm

The article suggests that the political party Sinn Fein did not react to Robinsons words – incorrect – their education minister Catriona Ruane asked that the outburst be examined under hate crime legislation. They have a long record of being vocal on gay rights issues.

  24. Bill Perdue, RainbowRED 8 Jun 2008, 3:10am

Sinn Féin, the pro –nationalist all Ireland socialist leaning party takes a strong stand on GLBT rights.

Recent polling the Republic indicates that 58 percent support full same sex marriage rights when number of those supporting the second class citizenship option of has fallen to 26 percent.
In the Republic SF and Labour support same sex marriage against the policies of FF, FG and the Greens. It’s part of the reason why SF continues to grow at the expense of the Greens and the majority parties. In the remnant colony in the north however, both SF and the SDLP decided, since it was going to become law anyway, to support civil partnerships, a form of second class citizenship for which they were rightly criticized by GLBT groups.

The DUP has always violently opposed the GLBT and women’s movement and worked to continue the apartheid-like conditions imposed on Irish working people. The DUP relied on the religious bigotry of Paisleys Presbyterian cult in their campaigns. The result was years of harsh communal violence. The right wing bigots who run the DUP and the Paisleyite cult should be prosecuted for hate crimes whenever they commit them.

  25. I’ll start off by saying that I have nothing against Christians as long as they keep it behind closed doors. In fact some of my best friends are Christian. However I find it hard to accept those who force their Christian views in my face.

On Radio 5 Live on Saturday night, I heard Iris label homosexuality an abomination and offered to provide homosexuals with psychiatric help with their “illness”. She also raised a point that she knew of people who had killed themselves because of their sexuality! May I suggest that this woman really has blood on her hands. Those people didn’t kill themselves because they were gay – they killed themselves because of the nightmare their lives are made having such hideously biggotted views violently shoved down their throats from so called Christians!

It is infact Iris herself who needs psychiatric help for believing in a ghost in the sky, and the unassailable truth of the horrible dogma in the bible (for balance, I may add that the Koran is no better) with no basis of evidence whatsoever.

If God, Allah or Yahweh really do exist, and as many theologens claim to be the same entity, either it wants it’s followers to be at war, or is impotent to act. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with having faith, or believing in an afterlife, but once you start putting words in the mouth of a fictional character in order to justify a position of hatred, this is really not acceptable.

  26. Tut Tut James, You are lowering the moral high ground we are currently enjoying by wishing this vile harridan harm.
Her conscience will eventually catch up with her and those that give her succor. The vile Mrs Robinson will be political history and that will be punishment enough, mark my words. If Reg Empey is on the ball he should be preparing his party for a comeback, because this is the beginning of the end for the Dopey Unionist Party and not a minute too soon.
I call nay plead with everyone who is appalled by this excuse for a human being to make a formal complaint to the Police Service of Northern Ireland in South Belfast or your nearest police station. Quote the Public Order Act. Northern Ireland.also
Incitement to Hatred act and any other law you can find that may be relevant.

This is a battle we must win because if we fail the fundies will make our lives unbearable or at least will try. ONWARD TO FREEDOM!!!!!!!

  27. I’m not gay but I think what she said was absolutely disgracefull

    If anyone is interested
    there’s a petition going round…

  28. Recommended reading for all the god freaks out there:
    YOU’LL LOVE IT…………….

  29. I think this is just ridiculous. I’m 15 years old, and when you hear stuff like this going round in your own school. Imagine how it affects young gay people? They’ll probably look at this and be too scared to be themselves and who they really are.

  30. Notborn Yesterday 14 Nov 2008, 9:52am

“I’ll start off by saying that I have nothing against Christians as long as they keep it behind closed doors.”

Oh dear, Rusky. Can you hear yourself? You want Christians to keep their faith “behind closed doors”, but deny them – and indeed many who have no particular faith – the right to ask you to keep your sexual behaviour behind closed doors?

This is the hypocrisy typical of both radical atheism and homosexuality.

  31. Notborn Yesterday 14 Nov 2008, 10:04am

Congratulations Iris on your brave stand. You will be hated for it by those who falsely accuse you of hatred, and even as this article makes no mention of your condemnation of violence against homosexuals you will continue to be misrepresented.

A vocal element (by no means all) within the homosexual community will ALWAYS visciously attack the character of those who stand, not against homosexuals but against homosexual acts. It will ALWAYS twist reasoned disapproval of homosexual behaviour – no matter how lovingly given – into an accusation of hatred. This is a tactic designed to divert attention from the real issues, such as the rampant disease (hey, if you want to argue that one you can read about it on any of your own comprehensive GLBT web-sites) and high suicide rate which it also twists into an accusation against those who promote and defend natural sexual relations.

This vocal element is ALWAYS among the first to deny any responsibility to a Higher Power, hailing evolution as its creator. Yet I have NEVER heard a sincere attempt to explain homosexuality from an evolutionary viewpoint. THINK about it. I guess the reason is pretty obvious, even to those who ridicule the argument that homosexual acts are unnatural.

Oh, and by the way, it doesn’t take “religious fanaticism” or fear to recognise the filthy nature of the acts that homosexuals commit. I have heard the same statement – in person – from an ex-homosexual.

Republicans must be loving this, once again the conservative Protestants of the Northern Ireland bible belt fail to shatter a single stereotype surrounding their backward thinking. It goes without saying the average Protestant is probably the most tolerant of all religios types but their nutcase enclaves seem to be even worse than Islam.
Fair play to republicans for painting the free derry monument be painted pink for solidarity with the gay community–community-at–pink-free-derry-wall-13464000.html

  33. Bishop Ioan 3 Jun 2009, 9:23am

I notice that whever people call these fundie bigots on their hatred and ignorance, the first thing they do is play the victim card. Not only are they hypocrites, but they are dishonest into the bargain, sins that, as I recall, were condemned as such by the Jesus they claim to love.

I suggest that this woman and others like her remember his warning at the end of one of his parables: “Whatever ye have done to these, the least of your brothers, you have done it unto ME.”
