On the heels of the California Supreme Court’s decision to legalise same-sex marriageand the subsequent announcement from talk show host Ellen Degeneres that she planned to wed long time girlfriend Portia De Rossiperhaps a guest appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show wasn’t the safest stop on Senator John McCain’s campaign tour.

But then again, the presumptive Republican nominee has never exactly played by the rules.

McCain stopped by the daytime gab fest to chat with the talk show host, and when talk turned to marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples, Degeneres wasn’t letting him off the hook easy.

“So lets talk about it,” Degeneres said, coming out of commercial break. “Let’s talk about the big elephant in the room.”

After telling McCain that even before the Supreme Court’s ruling, she and De Rossi had planned to have a ceremony that summer, Degeneres asked McCain to clarify his thoughts on same-sex marriage.

“I think that people should be able to enter into legal arrangements,” McCain answered.

“I think that is something we should encourage, particularly in the case of insurance and other areasdecisions that have to be made. I just believe in the unique status between man and women, and I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue.”

Mc Cain went on to say that despite their difference of opinion, he wishes Degeneres and De Rossi every happiness.

“So you’ll walk me down the aisle,” Degeneres asked.

“Touché,” McCain answered.
