7 April 2008International pressure on Egypt over HIV arrests + More than 115 organisations that advocate human rights and the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS have protested to the government of Egypt over a spate of recent arrests.The groups signing the letter represent 41 countries on six continents, among them Human Rights Watch and Amnesty.In a letter to the Health Ministry and the Egyptian Doctors' Syndicate, the groups said that doctors who helped interrogate men jailed on suspicion of being HIV-positive violated their own medical ethics. -
7 April 2008Poland approves Lisbon Treaty with rights opt-out 1 Both Houses of the Polish parliament have approved the Lisbon Treaty with an opt-out from the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights.The UK is the only other nation in the 27-member EU to opt out of the charter, which is legally binding on EU institutions such as the European Court of Justice, as part of the new Reform Treaty agreed by the EU heads of government in Lisbon.The Lisbon treaty needed a two-thirds majority vote in the Polish parliament to become law. -
7 April 2008Suicide prisoner was victim of trans bullying + A woman who hanged herself in her prison cell with shoelaces had complained that she was being victimised and picked on by other inmates because she had transitioned from being a man.Lisa Woodhall was serving a four and half year sentence after she slashed the throat of her boyfriend's ex-lover.Woodhall, who had undergone gender reassignment surgery in 2004, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent at Plymouth Crown Court in September 2005. -
7 April 2008Driver and paparazzi blamed for death of Diana 3 An inquest that heard lurid rumours that Diana, Princess of Wales was pregnant and murdered at the behest of the British Royal Family has concluded that she was unlawfully killed.However, the jury of five men and six women said the driver of the car that crashed in Paris on 31st August 1997, Henri Paul, and the paparazzi who chased the vehicle into a tunnel, were to blame for her death.Diana died shortly after the crash, her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed and driver Paul also died in the collision. -

8 April 2008Lesbian mums fight for legal rights in Israel + A Israeli lesbian couple have filed a suit in a Tel Aviv district court for the right to both be named the biological parents of their newborn baby boy.The case is exceptional as it is the first time that both partners in a homosexual relationship have had an active and biological role in the birth of the child.After the woman who bore the child experienced fertility problems the couple decided that the other partner would conceive. -
8 April 2008A touch of drag raises funds for Aberdeen’s Rainbowfest + A glamourous event held last Friday in the Scottish city of Aberdeen raised more than £1,000 for for Rainbowfest, the new lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender event for Aberdeen "City and Shire."Rainbowfeast was hosted by drag artistes Lexy and The Lushettes.Rainbowfest is to be held on the beach front at Queen's Links Aberdeen on Saturday 5th July, and organisers said they want it to be Scotland's biggest LGBT event yet. -

8 April 2008‘God Hates Fags’ sect could lose their church 6 A federal judge has ordered that the Westboro Baptist Church building and the Phelps-Chartered Law office be taken away from the owners in order to pay a $5 million (£2.54m) fine.The church runs numerous websites such as GodHatesFags.com, GodHatesAmerica.com and others expressing condemnation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, Roman Catholics, Muslims and Jews.The religious organisation was ordered to pay the damages after members of its congregation picketed the funeral of two American servicemen. -

8 April 2008“Only gays in the village” abusers found guilty 2 A mother and daughter are awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of harassing their gay neighbours.Karen Reeves, 44, and Christie Myles, 22, had both denied using homophobic and offensive abuse towards Michael Harris and Shires Crichton of Marley Lane, in Kingston, near Canterbury.The couple have been dubbed by locals as, 'The only gays in the village', a reference to a sketch in BBC comedy show Little Britain. -

9 April 2008Tatchell pledges his second preference vote to Ken 1 Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has said that the election of Boris Johnson as Mayor of London would be a "big mistake."In the comments section of The Guardian website he said that he would be voting for Green candidate Sian Berry, but his second preference vote will go to incumbent Mayor and Labour candidate Ken Livingstone.Mr Tatchell is the Green party candidate for the parliamentary constituency of Oxford East. -
9 April 2008Euro court will not re-open trans case + The European Court of Human Rights will not re-examine the case of a Lithuanian transsexual who won there last September.The seven judges ruled that Lithuania must implement new legislation on gender reassignment or pay damages.The 28-year-old, known as Mr L, has been undergoing gender reassignment since 1998 including hormone treatment and breast removal, but was blocked from more treatment because of the laws in Lithuania. -
9 April 2008Canada’s lesbian senator to tackle homophobic MP + The Prime Minister of Canada has declined to discipline one of his MPs over comments he made in 1991 calling gay people "homosexual faggots with dirt on their fingernails that transmit disease."Conservative Stephen Harper told the House of Commons on Monday that he considers the matter closed after Tom Lukiwski apologised.However, the only openly gay member of the PM's parliamentary party has decided to challenge Lukiwski about his remarks, which only came to light last week. -
9 April 2008MEPs demand EU directive cover gay discrimination 2 Members of the European Parliament's LGBT rights group and the International Lesbian and Gay Association are calling on the European Commission to propose a "horizontal" EU directive tackling discrimination on basis of sexual orientation.EU directives are legislation that requires member states to, for example, deal with discrimination, but leaves it up to the states to decide on the best course of action to take.A new EU directive will be decided on by the Commission in the coming months.
