7 March 2008GMFA lose contract for HIV prevention ads 3 A radical overhaul of National Health Service-funded HIV prevention services for gay men in London has seen a number of programmes shift from GMFA to Terrence Higgins Trust.GMFA, a gay health charity founded in 1992, has lost the contract for London advertising campaigns, which will now be delivered by THT, who also hold the contract for providing advertising campaigns on a national basis.THT also gained a part of the group work contract. -

7 March 2008Obama adviser quits after calling Hillary a monster 1 Unpaid foreign policy adviser Samantha Power has walked away from Barack Obama's Presidential campaign after describing New York Senator Hillary Clinton as a "monster" to a Scottish publication.Clinton's camp pushed for Obama to drop Power from his team, but the Harvard professor and author resigned after apologising for her inappropriate comment."It is wrong for anyone to pursue this campaign in such negative and personal terms," she said. -
9 March 2008Liam Fox’s “homophobic past” revealed 12 Liam Fox, Conservative shadow defence secretary, displayed homophobic credentials whilst at university, an investigation by the Sunday Herald has found.The Tory MP, who stood against David Cameron in the 2005 Conservative Party leadership content, resigned as a member of the University of Glasgow's student council in protest at a gay and lesbian society being admitted to the Glasgow University Union (GUU).He apparently said at the time: "[I do] not want the gays flaunting it in front of me, which is what they would do". -

10 March 2008US gay Catholics plan special welcome for Pope 26 A group that works for the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans in the Roman Catholic church is planning a series of protests against Pope Benedict during his visit to the US next month.The Rainbow Sash Movement said it is calling on "Catholics of good will" to take the Papal visit as an opportunity to shower the Pope mobile with ashes instead of confetti."Ashes are an ancient and appropriate greeting for a sinner who has caused the Church so much division and pain," RSM said in a statement. -

10 March 2008Poles appeal for funds to establish LGBT centre 1 Polish lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans activists are asking for help to establish the first LGBT centre in Poland.Szymon Niemiec, founder of the Polish Equality Parade, needs 75 000 euros in donations in order to establish the facility in Warsaw.Mr Niemiec said: "The Queer Central Station will be a place where everyone is welcome."It is our desire to encourage artists worldwide to contribute to a special gallery with periodical exhibitions." -
10 March 2008Pete Burns headlining at Aberdeen as organisers think big + Dead or Alive front man Pete Burns has been announced as the headline act to play at this year's Rainbowfest in Aberdeen.The event is to be held on the beach front at Queen's Links Aberdeen on Saturday 5th July, and organisers said they want it to be Scotland's biggest LGBT event yet.The festival is the idea of local promoter Gary Noble and aims to bring together the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in the area along with their families. -
10 March 2008Scottish politicians back removal of gay blood ban 18 An MEP has questioned why the National Blood Service is importing blood from countries where gay men can donate while banning any man in Britain who has ever had sex with another man from giving blood.A petition is being prepared for submission to the Scottish Parliament calling for a repeal to the ban the prevents gay and bisexual men from donating blood in the UK.Rob McDowall, the creator of the petition, has received support from Tory and SNP MEPs. -
10 March 2008“Ex-gay” adverts forced off the air in Canada 3 Activists in Canada have won a major victory against an ex-gay movement with the removal of an advert from a major television channel that promoted the course aimed at changing the sexual orientation of gay people.The ad, aired on the Canadian TV channel CTV, featured a man talking about how a lot of gay people actually don't want to be gay and that it's possible to change.LGBT activists in Canada launched an online campaign for the removal of the advert, utilising social networking sites. -
