5:05 PM — Smoking rates among the gay and lesbian community in the UK are significantly higher than the general population, and this No Smoking Day we are being urged to give up the fags for good.Around 40% of gays and lesbians smoke, as opposed to 23% of men and 24% of women in general population.Smoking kills more than 112,000 people in the UK each year, making it the country's biggest preventable killer. The gay, lesbian and bisexual community tend to smoke for different reasons and at an earlier age than heterosexual men and women.
Baldwin brothers disagree over gay marriage 6
4:50 PM — Film and TV star Alec Baldwin has spoken publicly about the anti-gay political views of his younger and less well-known brother Stephen.Stephen is best-known for his roles in the controversial 1994 film Threesome and 1995 thriller The Usual Suspects. He became a born-again Christian after the attacks on New York on September 11th 2001. During an appearance on the Howard Stern radio show in January he spoke out about same-sex marriage.

4:20 PM — Plague Over England, the new play by Nicholas de Jongh currently playing at the Finborough Theatre in London, opened last week to favourable reviews from the national press.Which must have been a double relief to the playwright, the theatre critic of the Evening Standard since 1991.Billed as a play about the 1953 arrest of actor Sir John Gielgud for cruising, in fact it accurately portrays several intersecting gay lives in the period.

12:55 PM — Presidential candidate Barack Obama has defended his support of civil unions by referring to the Sermon on the Mount.The famous sermon given by Jesus, which includes the Beatitudes, the instruction to 'turn the other cheek' and the Lord's Prayer, is found in the book of Matthew in the New Testament.Senator Obama is thought to have been referring to Jesus' instruction to: "Do to others what you would have them do to you."
Jamaican gays reject tourist boycott over homophobia 2
12:35 PM — J-Flag, the Jamaican lesbian and gay rights group, has rejected calls for a tourist boycott in protest at homophobia on the island.Canadian newspapers have been focusing on the prejudice and violence gay people face in Jamaica since a leading activist sought asylum there, and some have called for Canadians to refuse to holiday in the popular destination.In a statement released yesterday, J-Flag, Jamaica's Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays, said it shared the frustration at the "slow progress towards transforming the social climate."

12:21 PM — After winning the European Championship last year in Copenhagen and securing the right to host the contest in 2009, what next for London's leading gay rugby team?Ruggercub is the answer. From next Sunday the Kings Cross Steelers will be hosting their new club night at the Two Brewers in Clapham.The monthly event is aimed at "rugby boys and their followers." The launch party on 9th March 2008 features special guest DJ Andy Bell of Erasure fame.
MP targeted by “Satan” after gay earthquake comments 14
12:02 PM — A member of Israel's parliament who generated headlines across the world when he linked earthquakes to gay rights has been receiving death threats.Shlomo Benizri, who is a member of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, has been targeted by someone using the name "Satan."The Jerusalem Post reports: "It is unknown if those threats are connected to a suspicious envelope filled with white powder that the MK received last week."

11:30 AM — A Church of England bishop has said it is "careless" to refer to civil partnerships as marriages.The Right Reverend Jonathan Gledhill, Bishop of Lichfield, also attacked the government for weakening the status of marriage."Most of my gay friends would want to distinguish between marriage, which is something that happens for a man and a woman," he said.

10:20 AM — After plugging the show during her televised debate with rival Barack Obama last week, Hillary Clinton dropped by Saturday Night Live this weekend for a surprise guest appearance.After a parody skit of the debate, Clinton provided an "editorial response" and praised Amy Poehler's deft imitation of her on SNL.For the second week in a row, Saturday Night Live opened with a scene featuring a Democratic debate.

10:01 AM — Interest in the strange arrest of gay porn twins 'Teyon' and 'Keyon' exploded across the Net this week, even keying the national press into covering the story.The brothers, 26-year-old Taleon and Keyontyli Goffney, who have appeared in a variety of gay porn videos, were arrested last week in a suspected string of robberies across three states.The Associated Press leapt onto the odd tale of the suspected twin gay porn criminals this week.
