The Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of London will be holding an unusual event this evening in Covent Garden.

Brian Paddick will be hosting a ‘meet and greet’ event at the Box bar, which is billed as an opportunity for members of the LGBT community to meet him in person and put any questions they might have to him.

Londoners will be able to speak to him face to face between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

It is thought to be the first time that a candidate for Mayor of London has used a gay bar as a venue for a campaign event.

Until his retirement as Metropolitan police Deputy Assistant Commissioner in May 2007, Mr Paddick was the most senior out gay officer in the UK.

He was chosen as the Lib Dem candidate for Mayor of London by party members in the city.

Other candidates for Mayor include the Labour incumbent, Ken Livingstone, Conservative Boris Johnson and the Green party’s Sian Berry.

Londoners will go to the polls on May 1st.
