  1. The bit of the Telegraph report that gives the game away on this is the line, “Some interviewers declined to ask the question for fear of giving offence.”So, when asked one-to-one by a complete stranger, 1% of the population say they are bi and 1% say they are gay/lesbian.The only shocking revelation there is that 2% of the population are that comfortably out of the closet that they gave an honest answer. Far from “only 1 in 100″ to my mind it’s a case of “a remarkable 1 in 50…”.

To think that in this era of socalled equality, only 2% polled were comfortable enough to provide an honest answer. I think it is probably 1 in 25 who are, or more. Its clear that more work needs to be done to educate employers and the public in general. The fact that its still ok to use derogatory, antigay slurs is proof that ignorance and intolerance are alive and accepted in our country. Maybe we should make a fresh start by ensuring that the education system teaches diversity. After all, homophobia and ethnic slurs are a choice and learned behaviour at that, usually emanating from the home environment. Nobody comes into this world homophobic, religious, or xenophobic. Its how we are raised and educated.
