The nominations for the worst films of 2007 have been announced, and an attempt to make a comedy film about gay marriage has made it to the 28th annual Golden Raspberry awards shortlist.
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry has been nominated in eight categories including Worst Film, Worst Actor (Adam Sandler), Worst Supporting Actor (Kevin James), Worst Supporting Actress (Jessica Biel) and Worst Screen Couple (Sandler and EITHER James OR Biel), Worst Screenplay and Worst Director.
But it is beaten by the nine nominations for Lindsay Lohan movie I Know Who Killed Me.
Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr has been nominated for Worst Actor for his work in two films, Norbit and Daddy Day Camp.
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is concerned with two semi-homophobic firefighters who pretend to be gay and a couple to receive partnership benefits.
It was a massive hit in the US, knocking Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix from the number one slot at the box office.
However, many gay men were uncomfortable with the crude stereotypes the film relies on to get laughs from its heterosexual target audience.
The film’s co-star Kevin James defended the movie against accusations of homophobia.
“We screened it for gay rights group GLAAD (the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) because we certainly didn’t want to offend anybody in any way,” he said.
“The main reason of this movie is really just to make people laugh and that’s all we wanted to do.
“When you pick a subject like this, you’re honestly gonna have to walk that line and you want to show what it’s like out there.”
Nominees were determined by mailing ballots to 747 voters in 44 US states and 18 other countries.
