Seaside Pride will chase away the winter blues
For those of you finding January a struggle, help is at hand from the seaside city of Brighton.
Pride may seem like a distant memory, but fear not – Winter Pride kicks off on February 2nd, a festival of more than 70 events designed to cheer up even the most grumpy gay.
The festival has something for everyone, from an 80’s trans disco to a lesbian mud fight.
There will also be quizzes, cabaret, music, karaoke, casino nights, comedy nights, film nights a special Winter Pride pantomime, Fingeralla and the Smuggly Fisters , which has been described as ‘Cinderella with a twist’.
Now in its fourth year, Winter Pride raises funds for the main Pride Festival in August.
It also raises funds and awareness for other charities in Brighton and Hove.
Now the largest winter LGBT festival in the UK, Pride in Brighton and Hove began as a small event in 1992.
It was awarded its charitable status in 2004 and was named ‘Event of the Year’ at the first annual Brighton and Hove Business Awards in 2004.
The festival hosts a week of community events every February and August.
In 2003, the charity raised over £16,000 followed by more than £37,000 in 2004 by volunteer street collections and fundraising events for the grant scheme for the LGBT voluntary sector.
The Summer Pride Festival will take place between Saturday 26th July and Sunday 3rd August 2008. It is the largest LGBT free park event in Europe.
