12 November 2007China urged to fight HIV not positive people + China should focus its efforts on stopping HIV transmission, not on limiting the freedom of movement, expression and speech of people living with HIV, leaders from New York City-based Human Rights Watch said Friday at a global meeting of AIDS activists in Abuja, Nigeria.Human Rights Watch was commenting in advance of the November 11th to 13th board meeting of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Kuming, China. -
12 November 2007Gay football documentary to tackle stereotypes 1 This winter a new film that highlights the Brighton Bandits Gay Football Club is expected to make the festival circuit.The film follows the team through their 2006/07 season and explores the relationship between sexuality and soccer.Since 1997, the Brighton Bandits have been making a name for themselves as the only gay soccer club in the area. -
12 November 2007Amnesty to protest against Lithuanian homophobia + Amnesty International today called on its 2.2 million members worldwide to address the rising tide of homophobia in Lithuania.The EU country has seen a rising tide of open homophobia in recent months.In May the mayor of the capital Vilnius refused to give permission for an EU anti-discrimination truck tour to visit and Lithuanian bus drivers refused to drive buses bearing ads which promoted tolerance towards gay people. -
12 November 2007First Minister adviser to take up Stonewall post + Gay equality organisation Stonewall has announced the appointment of Derek Munn as director of public affairs.Mr Munn was special adviser to the First Minister of Scotland from 2003 until earlier this year and will take up his post on 3rd December."We're absolutely delighted to have secured someone of Derek's background and considerable abilities to fulfil this important role within the organisation," said Ben Summerskill, Stonewall's chief executive. -
12 November 2007New Polish PM pressed on civil unions + Gay rights activists in Poland have asked incoming Prime Minister Donald Tusk to discuss legalisation of civil unions, the introduction of comprehensive sexual education in schools and the ban of discrimination based on sexual orientation.Mr Tusk is head of the centre-right Christian-democratic Civic Platform Party (PO), which won the election on 21st October.According to Catholic World News PO member Stefan Niesiolowski said: "I will not agree to homosexual marriage." -
12 November 2007UN Commissioner backs LGBT rights + The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has spoken of her support for equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.Louise Arbour made her comments after an historic meeting at the UN last week.The event, held in parallel with the session of the third committee of the UN General Assembly, discussed the Yogyakarta Principles. -
12 November 2007Republican guilty of soliciting gay sex 5 A senior Florida Republican has been found guilty of soliciting oral sex from an undercover police officer.Bob Allen, a former co-chairman of the campaign to select Senator John McCain as the Republican US Presidential candidate, was spotted by police in Titusville, Florida on July 11th acting suspiciously at the men's toilets in a park.Officers decided to send a policeman undercover to investigate, and within minutes Mr Allen allegedly agreed to pay him $20 (£10) to allow him to perform oral sex. -
12 November 2007Americans warm to same-sex unions + More than half of Americans support civil unions according to the latest ABC News/Washington Post polls.In total, 55 per cent approve of legalising civil unions and giving same-sex couples the same rights as those who are married in matters such as insurance, inheritance and pensions.The latest figures are up from 45 per cent in the same poll in 2006. -
12 November 2007EU governments urged to remove tax on condoms + An online petition launched today urges EU governments to cut VAT on condoms to tackle the growth of AIDS in Europe.The European Parliament Socialist Group will present the petition to government ministers ahead of World AIDS Day on 1st December.Hundreds of Facebook users have already joined a group on the social networking site to support the campaign under the slogan "Cut AIDS, Cut VAT on Condoms." -
12 November 2007Gay activist sacked for attacking opponent’s wife 2 A Labour party candidate in the Australian federal election has removed a volunteer worker from his campaign after he launched a tirade of abuse at the wife of his opponent.Environment minister Malcolm Turnbull is fighting to retain the seat of Wentworth in Sydney for the incumbent Liberal party.The seat was subject to recent boundary changes and now includes gay districts such as Darlinghurst and Kings Cross. -
12 November 2007Life sentence for teenager guilty of homophobic murder 1 A teenager was sentenced to life imprisonment today for murdering a gay council officer in a homophobic attack.David Meehan, 19, admitted to murdering James Kerr, 51, in South Inch public park and leaving him for dead while he and his accomplices went to a party.According to Mr Meehan, the three walked past Mr Kerr on their way back but ignored their victim who was still breathing. -

12 November 2007More sex please – the British on holiday + One in five Britons has sex with someone new when abroad, according to research published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.The conclusions are based on interviews with 12,000 men and women aged between 16 and 44 as part of the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (NATSAL).14% of men and 7% of women admitted to having sex with a new partner while overseas.
