1 November 2007Republican resigns amid gay sex scandal 7 A Washington state lawmaker who was caught with his pants down earlier this week - figuratively and literally - has resigned.On Monday Republican State Representative Richard Curtis told a local newspaper, The Columbian, "I have not had sex with a guy," the guy in question being Cody Castagna, a 26-year-old waiter from the Spokane area.Originally, Curtis told police he was the victim of an extortion attempt by Castagna at the posh Davenport Tower hotel on October 26th. -

1 November 2007Irish government to introduce civil partnerships 12 The Irish Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform has announced that the government will introduce a bill to legalise civil partnerships by March 2008.While opposing a similar bill put forward by the opposition Labour party yesterday, Brian Lenihan said that details would follow soon.He confirmed that in the government's opinion the special place of marriage in the Irish Constitution there would be no moves to legalise gay marriage. -

1 November 2007Met found guilty over Menezes shooting 1 London's police force has been found guilty of breaching health and safety laws when they gunned down Jean Charles de Menezes in Stockwell undergound station in July 2005.On their second day of their deliberation the jury found the Metropolitan Police guilty.The Met was fined £175,000 and ordered to pay £385,000 costs by judge Mr Justice Henriques at the Old Bailey. -

2 November 2007Hate church given taste of own medicine 2 In what some may see as an example of karma, the family of Reverend Fred Phelps awoke this morning to a pair of messages spray painted to a sign and a fence on the grounds of their Kansas church.The message on the sign said, "God hates the Phelps," while the message on the fence read, "God hates intolerance," according to a report from the ABC television station in Topeka, Kansas.Topeka Police were called to the Phelps compound, which houses the family's Westboro Baptist Church, around 10 a.m. -
2 November 2007Foster couple agree to council diversity policy + A Christian couple have agreed to abide by the local council policy on diversity, despite previously resigning as foster carers over a row about homosexuality.65-year-old Vincent Matherick and his 61-year-old wife Pauline attracted the attention of the press when they stood down after six years of providing foster care, claiming that Somerset County Council was asking them to "promote" homosexuality.They have now issued a joint statement with the council and signed the Equalities Promise and may be allowed to continue fostering. -

2 November 2007Prison for tennis coach who had sex with 13-year-old 1 A former tennis protege turned coach has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison.Last month Claire Lyte, 29, was convicted of four counts of sexual activity with a child at Liverpool Crown Court.During her three week trial, the court heard testimony from the mother of a 13-year-old girl, who caught them in bed together in 2005.Lyte's worked as a coach at the Lawn Tennis Association academy in Loughborough, Leicestershire and the girl was one of her pupils. -
