16 October 2007Record number of gay politicians receive support + An organisation dedicated to increasing the number of openly LGBT elected officials at all levels in the United States has announced that it will be backing a record number of candidates in 2007.The Gay Lesbian Victory Fund, who provide strategic, technical and financial support, has announced ten new endorsements, bringing the number of supported candidates to 71.Among them are Steve Pougnet, Mayor of Palm Springs, California; William "Bill" Schmidt, Mayor of Peekskill, New York and Jass Stewart, Mayor of Brockton, Massachusetts. -
16 October 2007Two month contest for Lib Dem leadership + The Liberal Democrat party, still reeling from the shock resignation of its leader Sir Menzies Campbell yesterday, will hold a two month race to replace him.As expected, the party's President Simon Hughes, who came out as bisexual during the previous leadership race in February 2006, has ruled himself out as a candidate this time.Sir Ming resigned yesterday with immediate effect without speaking to the press. -

17 October 2007Turkish authorities try to close gay group 5 An attempt by the Governor's Office of Istanbul to close down Lambda Istanbul, an LGBT group, has raised questions about human rights in Turkey.A department responsible for non-governmental organisations alleges that the group violates Turkish laws on morality.The Governor had asked in early 2007 that the group be shut down.In July local prosecutors rejected the complaint but the Governor's Office then took the case to a higher court which heard the case in July 2007 and ordered a second hearing which begins tomorrow. -
17 October 2007Canadian soldiers jailed for Amsterdam attack 1 Two Canadian soldiers stationed in Holland ahead of a deployment in Afghanistan have been convicted of beating up a gay man in Amsterdam.Eric Wright and Ryan Dowie, both 22 at the time of the attack last May, received custodial sentences for the attack, which left their 28-year-old victim with a skull fracture and broken nose.The soldiers convinced the court that they called their victim a "fag" and "gay" because he was a civilian wearing dog tags. -

18 October 2007Charity aims to tackle needs of black gay men 1 Gay Men Fighting AIDS has been awarded a grant by the Big Lottery Fund for their work around peer education projects and deliver health promotion initiatives to the black gay community in London.Sigma Research data from December 2005 found that black gay men are more likely to be diagnosed with HIV compared to other ethnic groups in the UK - 11.1% compared to 6.4% white British gay men - or have a partner with HIV. -
18 October 2007The gay hate church and the Presidential candidate + Members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas have sent a letter to Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson in the hopes he will support their stance against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.In the letter, released to the press earlier this week, the church said, "We know what your position used to be on the homosexual question - and it was wonderful and we saw eye to eye." -
