9 October 2007Tories cautious over incitement to gay hate 100 The Conservative party has said it will "look carefully" at proposals from the government to introduce a new offence of inciting hate against gay, lesbian and bisexual people.Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Herbert, speaking during the second reading of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill, said that the right to free speech must be balanced with protecting gay people from hatred.The Liberal Democrats welcomed the proposed new offence, which will be added to the bill as an amendment in committee stage. -
9 October 2007Gay club no-show costs Boy George + Singer and DJ Boy George has been ordered to pay more than £30,000 compensation to a gay nightclub in Los Angeles after he failed to turn up at the launch.Mr George had been paid £5,000 for an appearance, but he returned to the UK after his arrest in New York for cocaine possession and only gave the LA club owners ten days notice that he would not be making an appearance.Earlier the 46-year-old had claimed that he was in no state to play in clubs where drugs were being used. -

10 October 2007Moldova criticised over LGBT injustice + Moldovan authorities have "to ensure full respect of the fundamental rights of all minorities, including sexual minorities."That is the resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of of the Council of Europe (PACE) entitled About functioning of democratic institutions in Moldova.The resolution is based on the report of the monitoring committee about the honouring of obligations and commitments by Moldova and adopted by PACE earlier this month. -
10 October 2007G-A-Y awards to be televised + London club promoter Jeremy Joseph has revealed that the inaugural G-A-Y awards will be televised on Sky One on Saturday 1st December to coincide with the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day.The awards will be held at the London Astoria on the 29th and 30th November, where it will be filmed by Double Jab Productions.The G-A-Y awards aim to play tribute to the stars that have played at the Saturday night club night, including some of the biggest names of pop, such as Kylie Minogue, The Spice Girls and Madonna. -

10 October 2007Oregon moves ahead with domestic partnerships + Same-sex couples in Oregon had ample reason to celebrate last night, as opponents of the US state's recently passed domestic partnership law failed to gather enough signatures to put a referendum overturning the measure on the November 2008 ballot.Opponents needed 55,179 valid, unduplicated signatures for the referendum to move forward.Although nearly 63,000 signatures were turned in to state officials, only 55,063 of them were found to be valid and unduplicated.

10 October 2007Canadian soldiers face “gay bashing” charges + Two Canadian soldiers on leave from Afghanistan have been arrested and charged with beating up a gay man in Amsterdam.The men, both 22, were confirmed by Dutch police to have been arrested on May 26th and charged with attempted manslaughter, attempted criminal negligence causing bodily harm and public violence.Dutch media report that prosecutors have pushed for an eight-month jail term for one of the offenders, while the other soldier faces six weeks in prison. -

10 October 2007Suspended sentence for man spying on lesbian couple + A peeping Tom from Stoke has been found guilty of spying on a lesbian couple having sex in their bedroom, and put on the sex offenders register.Dean Burton, 36, was also given a 51-week suspended jail sentence.
