29 October 2007Evangelicals call for ban on Harry Potter books 10 America's largest conservative organisation has called for the banning of the Harry Potter books and films after author JK Rowling revealed that main character Albus Dumbledore was a gay wizard.The Christian Coalition of America claims to have 2.5 millions supporters and describes its mission as "defending America's Godly heritage."Its chairman, Roberta Combs, said she was disappointed that Rowling chose to out one of the most popular characters in children's literature. -
29 October 2007MP welcomes removal of “gay panic” defence + A Gay Labour MP in New Zealand has praised the decision by the country's Law Commission to remove the "gay panic defence."Charles Chauvel said that the defence, which allowed a person charged with murder to claim that they were driven into a state of violent temporary insanity by a sexual advance from the victim, was unacceptable.The defendant rarely wins acquittals but if pleaded successfully the murder charge is reduced to manslaughter. -

29 October 2007LGBT conference concludes despite bans and protests + 11th annual ILGA-Europe conference came to a close yesterday.It was held in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius and attended by almost 200 delegates from all over Europe.Fears that anti-gay activists had attempted to sabotage the conference were unfounded - Lithuanian and international media had reported on smoke bombs set off in a gay nightclub adjacent to the conference venue. -
29 October 2007Candidate drops out of election over nude photos on gay sites 4 An Australian campaigner for family values has been dumped as a candidate by the Family First Party after nude photos of him were discovered on gay websites.Although Andrew Quah, 22, admitted that it was possible he had posed for two of the images, he claimed that a third had been digitally manipulated.Several websites are running the pictures, with one describing him as "Australia's Smallest Loser." -

30 October 2007Study claims homophobic literature is available at UK mosques 3 Extremist texts that encourage hatred of gays, Christians and Jews are available at Britain's mosques.Researchers for the centre-Right think tank Policy Exchange claim to have found such publications in a quarter of the 100 mosques and Islamic institutions they visited, including London Central Mosque in Regent's Park, which is funded by Saudi Arabia.Many of the publications allegedly called on British Muslims to segregate themselves from non-Muslims and contained repeated calls for gays to be executed. -

30 October 2007Local paper censured over “lesbian lover” headline 1 The Press Complaints Commission has upheld a complaint that a newspaper printed an inaccurate headline about a lesbian woman."Man attacked girlfriend's lesbian lover," which appeared in the January 26th edition of the Isle of Wight County Press, was judged to breach the PCC Code of Practice.Ms Leila Mahmoud, of Ryde, had been the subject of an assault by her friend's boyfriend, who had pleaded guilty at his trial.
