The damage has however been done.And the newspaper may well face defamation proceedings anyway.I have no wish to curtail the freedom of the press, but it is also their responsibility to be accurate and unbiased. If they are not, there should be appropriate consequences.Unfortunately a complaint to the PCC will just result in a slap on the wrist for the newspaper concerned. I would like to see something like a points system, where repeated breaches of the Code of Practice would automatically lead to legal proceedings and public censure and financial penalty in the courts for the offenders.
