Why should anyone be surprised the majority of 18-24 year old heterosexuals rarely or never think about HIV when making decisions about their sex lives. Why should they? The level of risk the average UK young heterosexual perceive in relation to HIV is probably accurate (practically nill). They have very little chance on average of being exposed. The conflation of young heterosexual risk with new diagnoses being mostly amongst heterosexuals is ridiculous. The majority of heterosexual diagnosis are amongst African people who were infected outside the UK but tested in the UK. Those at greatest risk of getting HIV in the next year are those who have sex with homosexually active men with HIV and people from Africa with HIV. I don’t think that it is ethical to overstate the risk that young heterosexuals have to scare them into using condoms so that they decrease their relatively high risk of infection from other STIs.The way this information is presented is misleading. Young Heterosexuals do not have the greatest risk of contracting HIV, they know it and will have little confidence in health promotion which implies otherwise.I believe that the 1st GI Johnny viral email is unethical and is at the expense of gay men or a sensible portrayal of the reasons why people have unsafe sex. It is meant to be funny but my reading of the implicit messages is anything but. “Dr Bareback” is described as evil (all unprotected sex is evil) as are his “commando bandits” (read arse bandits or gay men or anal sex, dressed as they are in chaps, jockstraps, harnesses and moustaches) who are “pushing at the back door” (anal sex). Mimsy (vagina) is just a poor disempowered female who on Dr Barebacks entry lies down on the bed and spreads her legs. She is saved by GI Johnny (male and a condom)from the evils of Dr Bareback (unprotected sex) and “bandits” (anal sex or gay men), unable as she would be to protect herself or insist on the kind of sex she wants. It is unethical to denigrate one group (gay men)with a greater risk of contracting HIV for the sake of a funny email or for the sake of increasing the perception of danger in the minds of young heterosexuals (gay men associated as they are with HIV). I would imagine it does little to empower young women. It might be funny and encourage people to go to a website with good information. But I don’t think the means justify the end.

HIV/AIDS? Sexual Health Education is still hampered by Institutional Homophobia. In Cornwall (UK) the police believe encouraging 16/17yr old students to have hepatitus jabs attend a GU Clinic for sexual health advice is “SEXUAL GROOMING”.Cornwall police also believe the film “The Birdcage” cert 15 (starring comedian Robin Williams)is a gay porn film which can be used for “SEXUAL GROOMING”.Cornwall Police: Probably the most homophobic in the UK.HIV/AIDS ignorance in Cornwall Authorities is rife…see the videos.

I agree Vauxhalldave – it ignores young gay men and that’s where the epidemic is, alongside africans. we need to tell the BBC the THT doesn’t speak for us. i have written and I encourage you to.as an older gay man who lived through the 80s/90s I am appalled at the complacency.
