13 September 2007Lesbian torture case to be heard in Uganda 2 The High Court of Uganda has over-ruled the objections of the country's Attorney General and allowed two lesbian activists who claim that police tortured them to have their case heard.In July 2005 the house of Victor Juliet Mukasa, of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) was raided in the middle of the night by local government officials who seized documents and other material.Another lesbian activist, Yvonne Oyoo, a Kenyan student who was in Juliet's house on the night of the raid, was arrested and detained by local government officials and then taken to a police station. -

14 September 2007HSBC wins orientation discrimination case 1 Multinational bank HSBC has said it is pleased with today's decision by an employment tribunal that they did not discriminate against an employee on the grounds of his sexual orientation.Peter Lewis, a former head of equity at HSBC, won a partial victory last year when a tribunal ruled that the bank had discriminated against him on four grounds because of his sexual orientation.However, he was unable to prove discrimination in relation to 12 other grounds, including his dismissal from the bank in 2004 for gross misconduct. -

16 September 2007Judge: “Thugs” carried out homophobic attack in Harrogate 5 A judge has castigated three young men for being "thugs" who carried out a sadistic homophobic attack in Harrogate.Judge Paul Hoffman handed down an indeterminate sentence to Craig Grant, 20, and Carl Rutherford, 18, ordering a minimum term of four-and-a-half years before elidgability for parole for stamping on the head of a 42-year-old gay man in Harrogate's Valley Gardens, leaving him with brain damage. -
