24 September 2007International AIDS vaccine trial shut down + An experimental AIDS vaccine research trial has been terminated after recent findings that the drug has failed to prevent HIV infection in test subjects.According to a press release from the vaccine's developer, Merck Co., the vaccine was being tested in uninfected volunteers at high risk for acquiring HIV.Not only did the drug fail to prevent infection, more inoculated volunteers contracted the virus than volunteers who were not inoculated. -

24 September 2007Gay allegations against minister blamed on “dirty tactics” 1 The two main political parties in Australia are accusing each other of dirty tricks and smear campaigns in the run-up to a federal general election later this year.The governing Liberal party has accused their Labour rivals of producing a "fact sheet" about a married minister that claims he has sexually harassed male staff and regularly visits gay bath houses in Sydney.The Labour leader Kevin Rudd rejected allegations that his party was behind the "fact sheet" and claimed the government is running a dirty tricks campaign against him. -

24 September 2007LGBT characters on US network TV in decline + With the arrival of the 2007-2008 television season, the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) representations on scripted American network television continues to decline, according to an analysis conducted by the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).The study shows that, despite improved quality, LGBT representations will represent only 1.1% (7) of all series regular characters in the 2007-08 broadcast television schedule, down from 1.3% (9) in 2006, and 1.4% (10) in 2005. -
24 September 2007NI politician praises police cruising sting operation + A controversial operation against men looking for sex in public toilets in the Northern Ireland town of Coleraine has been praised by a local SDLP representative.Twelve men have been brought before the courts after the Police Service of Northern Ireland launched a surveillance operation at public toilets in the town after complaints from local residents.A 46-year-old man from Londonderry and a 44-year-old from Coleraine were fined £250 by North Antrim Magistrates Court after being convicted of "intentionally engaging in sexual activity." -
