13 September 2007New documentary features gay Muslim experience + A number of movies set in the Middle East have been shown during this week's Toronto International Film Festival, but only one of them focuses on gay Muslims.That film, A Jihad For Love, is a documentary Indian filmmaker Parvez Sharma drafted in the six years following the September 11th 2001 attacks in New York.In that time, Sharma followed the experiences of gay Muslims in 12 countries, including India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa and France. -
13 September 2007Surge in AIDS cases among gay New Yorkers + New York City health officials have released a report saying HIV infection rates have risen substantially among young gay men over the last six years.According to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene report, new HIV diagnoses among gay men under 30 have increased by 33 percent in that time, with the majority of new cases showing up in black and Latino gay men.Unfortunately, the report didn't offer any explanations for why rates of HIV infection have risen among gay youth. -
13 September 2007Gay support clubs make US schools safer + Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) help make schools safer for all students and likely play an integral role in mitigating the negative impact of bullying and harassment on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students, according to a research brief released today by GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.As of today, 3,612 GSAs are registered with GLSEN from every state, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.GSAs are student clubs that seek to improve school climate by addressing and reducing anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in school. -
13 September 2007Lithuania considers ban on “propagation of homosexuality” 5 A new law currently before the Lithuanian parliament could be amended to ban the "promotion" of gay, lesbian or bisexual relationships to children.The Protection of Minors against the Detrimental Effects of Public Information Bill will be debated by MPs later this autumn.Parliamentarians claim "propagation" of relationships outside of heterosexual marriage has "negative consequences for the physical, mental and, first and foremost, moral development of minors." -

13 September 2007Same-sex married couples counted in Canada census + The 2006 Canada census gave lesbian and gay married couples the chance to register their status for the first time - and 7,465 couples did so.The national survey, carried out every five years, was criticised by gay rights advocates because same-sex married people had to register their status in the "other" box.The country's statistics bureau considered a range of options to record them on census forms, including the use of non gender-specific terms like 'spouse', which was ultimately ruled too confusing. -

13 September 2007Lesbian torture case to be heard in Uganda 2 The High Court of Uganda has over-ruled the objections of the country's Attorney General and allowed two lesbian activists who claim that police tortured them to have their case heard.In July 2005 the house of Victor Juliet Mukasa, of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) was raided in the middle of the night by local government officials who seized documents and other material.Another lesbian activist, Yvonne Oyoo, a Kenyan student who was in Juliet's house on the night of the raid, was arrested and detained by local government officials and then taken to a police station.
