11 July 2007UPS accused of discrimination against gay employees + Gay rights groups have criticised the delivery company UPS for depriving employees in same-sex partnership of health insurance benefits.According to New Jersey law, same-sex couples in civil unions have equal entitlement to employment benefits, yet UPS makes a difference between married couples and those in civil-unions in terms of health insurance.This means the company is defying a court ruling which required equality regardless of sexual orientation. -

11 July 2007Birmingham towpath rapists might get life + A judge at Birmingham Crown Court told two man convicted of robbing and then raping his male victim that they could be given a life sentence.Daniel Myers,20, of Barry Jackson Tower in Aston, was found guilty alongside Nikos Johnson, 26, of Rawling Street, Ladywood, of one charge of robbery and two of rape.The Birmingham Post reports that during the trial Myers revealed under cross-examination that he is HIV+ -
11 July 2007Psychologists meet to review gay policy + The American Psychological Association is to review its polity on counselling for gay and lesbian people, and activists are hopeful they will denounce the "ex-gay" movement that claims it can 'cure' homosexuality.A six-member panel will meet next week to begin the review process.Leading religious groups in America have already begun lobbying the APA to reverse a 1997 decision that gay people should not be treated as mentally ill. -
11 July 2007Lesbian writer honoured by Canada + Jane Rule, 76, a writer of lesbian-themed novels, is to be appointed to the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honour, in recognition of her lifetime contribution to literature.Ms Rule has won many awards over the years as a writer, educator, gay rights activist, including the Order of British Colombia 2004.Born in New Jersey in 1931, Ms Rule moved to Galiano Island, Canada with partner Helen Sonthoff, after a peripatetic childhood in America. -

11 July 2007Anglicans advertise for foster gay couples + A branch of the urban mission and welfare service of the Anglican Church in Australia has inadvertently become involved in the political row about gay parenting by taking an advert in a gay publication.Teenshare, part of Anglicare, has taken the ad in monthly gay paper OUT in Perth to encourage gay and lesbian couples to foster children aged 12 to 17.Last month the news that a gay male couple had adopted a baby was welcomed by lawmakers in the state of Western Australia.
