4 July 2007Assault on trans woman not a hate crime 3 A teenager has been found guilty of aggravated battery, but not of hate crime by a juvenile judge in Palm Beach Country, Florida, today.In June 2006, the then 17-year old beat a 39-year old trans-woman, according to his attorney out of self-defence.The woman claims that the teen was sexually aggressive towards her, although she had told him that she was not a biological woman. -

4 July 2007Ignorance lives on 25 years after Terry Higgins died + Today's 25th anniversary of the death of Terry Higgins has been marked by a new survey from the charity set up in his memory.Mr Higgins was among the first people to die with AIDS in the UK.Despite the work of the Terrence Higgins Trust to educate the British public about the dangers of the virus, the survey reveals ignorance among all age groups. -
4 July 2007No July edition of Attitude magazine 1 Gay lifestyle magazine attitude has failed to appear for the second time in six months.The Press Gazette reports that staff have not been paid since April, as the magazine's parent company, Giant Clipper, goes through a financial crisis.Newsagent chain WH Smith has delisted the magazine over unpaid bills. -
4 July 2007Lib Dems appoint new equality spokesperson + Liberal Democrat leader Ming Campbell has appointed Jo Swinson as the party's spokesperson on women and equality issues.Ms Swinson, 27, is the youngest MP in the Commons, referred to as the Baby of the House. -
4 July 2007UK marriages down as civil partnerships flourish + The number of marriages in Wales and England has dramatically fallen to the lowest point on record.The drop in the number of couples tying the knot showed a 10% fall to 244,710 weddings in 2005, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show.Other figures showed that 18,000 civil partnerships took place in the UK since they were introduced in December 2005 and the end of December 2006. -

4 July 2007Bill Gates acquires major stake in gay publisher PlanetOut + Just days after shares in Gay.com publisher, PlanetOut rose 20 per cent on Nasdaq, a company that invests the wealth of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, has purchased a major stake in the company.PlanetOut, which also owns the Adovocate and RSVP Cruises, floated in October 2004 at a share price of $9 (£4.48), it quickly rose to $14.26 (£7.10) in November.
