20 June 2007Firefighters are the Pride of Scotland + Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue service, are going all out at the Pride Scotia event in Edinburgh, this Saturday, 23 June.The service are a key Stonewall Scotland Diversity Champion, promoting fair treatment in the workplace for LGB staff.As well setting up a recruitment stand at the festival, which takes place in Pilrig Park, firefighters from local Macdonald Road Fire Station will be carrying out dramatic car accident rescue demonstrations. -

21 June 2007Asia Pacific Outgames launched in Australia + Every year the number of gay sporting events seems to grow and as a precursor to the 2009 Outgames in Copenhagen, Melbourne, Australia will be hosting the inaugural Asia Pacific Outgames in 2008.In cooperation with the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association, Melbourne Outgames has begun creating a sporting event, which will coincide with the annual Midsumma Festival.The festival is Melbourne's premier gay and lesbian cultural and arts event. -
21 June 2007US cuts funds for abstinence-based sex education + A Senate Appropriations Subcommittee has cut next year's budget for controversial programmes that teach abstinence as the only way to practice safe sex.The programmes have been found to routinely teach medically inaccurate information about contraception and HIV/AIDS and mandate teaching that sex outside of a heterosexual marriage "is likely to have harmful psychological and physical effects." -
21 June 2007Mayor defends rejection of gay councillor 3 Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has rejected criticism of his decision to reject nine men for appointment to the London Fire Authority because they are all white.One of the men, gay Haringey borough councillor Ed Butcher was selected as the Lib Dem nominee following an election amongst all London Lib Dem councillors in May 2006.However the mayor took steps to refuse to appoint nine representatives on the grounds that they were unrepresentative. -

21 June 2007Teenage lesbians vindicated over bus kiss + A bus driver who kicked two 14-year-old girls off a bus in Oregon for kissing will be disciplined, it has been announced.A spokesman for Portland's transit system said the driver, who had eleven years experience, had broken company policy."Removing the girls from the bus was not consistent with our policy," said TriMet General Manager Fred Hansen. -

21 June 2007Sugar Rush author retires from journalism + Julie Burchill, one of the UK's best known newspaper columnist, has announced she is to retire from journalism.She revealed that the success the TV adaptation of her novel, Sugar Rush, has led to increased offers of TV work and that she feels thirty years is, "way enough, for me and for my public."Burchill started her career at NME aged 17, and went on to write for The Guardian and The Times. -
21 June 2007Pride celebration a first for Doncaster + The Yorkshire town of Doncaster is preparing to host its first Gay/Trans Pride event with a spectacular and colourful festival to be held in the Market Place on Sunday 19th August from 12noon."Pride events are non-political, non-campaigning events designed to be a festival of fun and celebration for the LGBT community and supporters."The events provide the community with an opportunity to be highly visible and this is a first for South Yorkshire," said organisers. -
21 June 2007Army bans soldiers in uniform from London Pride 12 A split has emerged in the Armed Forces over the issue of London's Pride march on the 30th June.The Chief of the General Staff has issued orders banning LGB Army staff from marching in unifom at the event or from wearing anything that would identify their Army role.General Sir Richard Dannatt's decision has caused controversy at the Ministry of Defence and among the gay community. -
21 June 2007Calls to re-examine murder of gay director + Political leaders in Rome have called for a new investigation in the death of acclaimed film director Pier Paulo Pasolini in 1975.A 17-year-old rent boy, Giuseppe Pelosi, was convicted of his murder.Two years ago, on his release from prison, Pelosi claimed that three other men had attacked Pasolini and repeatedly ran him over with his own car. -
21 June 2007Protester planned to bomb Jerusalem gay Pride 2 The discovery of a small homemade bomb intended for the parade route of a gay rights march has heightened tensions in the holy city of Jerusalem.The parade has now finished, with 18 people arrested for attempting to disrupt the event.There have been small violent incidents across the city in protest at the gay Pride, which Orthodox Jews regard as unbiblical and unsuitable. -

22 June 2007Homophobic politician outed on national TV 2 Gay rights activist Nicolas Alexeyev told a live TV audience yesterday that a member of the Russian State Duma is gay.Speaking on the talk show K baryeru Mr Alexeyev outed the conservative MP Alexander Chuev.Mr Chuev is one of the most outspoken opponents of gay rights, and has introduced proposals to the Duma to outlaw the "promotion" of homosexuality and ban "gay propaganda." -

22 June 2007Japanese lesbian candidate excites foreign attention + Kanako Otsuji, Japan's first openly lesbian politician and candidate in the upcoming Upper House election, held a press conference at Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan on 20 June.While the Japanese media has paid attention almost only to Otsuji's sexuality, foreign journalists are more interested in her campaign in itself.If elected she will be the first openly LGBT politician in parliament. -
22 June 2007Nationwide project for Irish gay youth + The Irish government is working with gay community workers to establish a network of LGBT youth groups across the country.The Health Service Executive (HSE) is developing the programme with Belong To, a Dublin project that has been running for the past four years.The project's national co-ordinator said that numbers of young gay people between 14 and 23 attending the group has doubled every year. -
