Angela Eagle has been appointed as a minister in the British government.

New Prime Minister Gordon Brown has made her Exchequer Secretary, a junior Treasury position.

Her twin sister Maria, already a minister under Tony Blair, moves from the Northern Ireland Office to the Ministry of Justice.

Ben Bradshaw MP, an out gay man, moves from the Environment Department to become Minister of State at the Department of Health and Minister for the South West.

Angela Eagle became a member of the Blair government following the 1997 general election as Under Secretary of State at Environment, Transport and the Regions, moving to the Department of Social Security in 1998.

After the general election in 2001 she was a junior minister at the Home Office but was sacked by former Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2002.

Ms Eagle is the first and so far only openly lesbian MP.
