19 June 2007Congresswoman to lead ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal + Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher will succeed Congressman Marty Meehan (D-MA) as the lead sponsor of the Military Readiness Enhancement when Meehan leaves the House of Representatives later this summer.The legislation, originally introduced in 2005, would repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual personnel.Tauscher was an original co-sponsor of the legislation that is currently supported by a bi-partisan coalition of 127 lawmakers. -

19 June 2007Slave owners responsible for Jamaican homophobia + A church minister has claimed that the hatred of gay people endemic on the island of Jamaica is directly related to the rape of male slaves by white English masters.In an article in the Jamaica Observer John Hardy, of the New Testament Church of God in Kingston, said he thinks it will be hundreds of years before gay people are accepted on the island.Homosexuality is illegal in Jamaica, a former British colony, and the culture is deeply homophobic. -

19 June 2007Australian politicians unite to vote against gay rights + A motion in the Australian Senate to grant single people and same-sex couples access to fertility treatment has been defeated by a coalition of left and right.The opposition Labour party voted with John Howard's government to defeat the measure proposed by Green Senator Kerry Nettle by 51 votes to eight.She wanted the federal government to work with the states and territories to give IVF and adoption rights to all people. -
19 June 2007Gay councillor rejected for Fire role 2 The Mayor of London has rejected nine men for appointment to the London Fire Authority because they are all white.Ken Livingstone says he wants the authority to accurately reflect London's racial makeup and the appointments, "failed to tackle the under-representation of women and black, Asian and ethnic minority Londoners."The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) is responsible for the London Fire Brigade. -
