A Florida city manager who was fired just days after her gender reassignment surgery has officially changed her name, from Steve Stanton to Susan Stanton, after a two-minute court hearing yesterday.

Susan Ashley Stanton told reporters: “I didn’t anticipate this being the emotional experience it was. It’s a critical step.”

Circuit Judge Cynthia J. Newton said: “Miss Stanton, congratulations, and I wish you the very best in going forward.”

Miss Stanton picked the name Susan because it was the name her mother would have picked if she had been born a girl.

In March of this year PinkNews.co.uk reported how Largo city commission vote 5-2 to fire Miss Stanton from her $140,000-a-year (£72,850) post.

The reason given by one of her colleagues was that Miss Stanton had lost integrity in the eyes of her staff.

Since her job was terminated, Miss Stanton has lobbied Washington for better understanding of transgender issues and is currently working on a book about her life.
