A British man has been arrested over the murder of a gay German man in Gran Canaria.

Police are treating the murder as a “crime of passion,” as no money was taken from the victim.

Karl Heinz Thonningen, 44, was stabbed to death at 0500 when returning home from gay clubs in the popular Playa Del Ingles holiday resort.

Two ambulances attended the scene, but paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.

The victim had gone out for the night while his partner stayed in the hotel. Police have searched the area, but have been unable to find a murder weapon.

A 39-year old Scottish man, known only as EB, was arrested for the murder on Monday, after being found in a drug-induced coma following a suicide attempt.

A spokesman told The Edinburgh Evening News: “A British man has been detained in connection with a murder in Gran Canaria. He did come from Edinburgh, however we do not have a name to release at this stage.”

The man, who has not yet been charged, is due to appear in court today.

Police believe that EB killed Mr Thonningen after finding out he was in a long term relationship.
