Heiress, socialite and gay icon Paris Hilton began her jail sentence for violating probation in Los Angeles yesterday.

Hilton’s jail term has already been cut from 45 days to 23 days under state sentencing guidelines, but she did not have to hand herself in until Tuesday.

Richard A. Hutton, her attorney, said: “Paris Hilton has turned herself in to begin serving her sentence for violating probation at a Los Angeles County Jail located in Lynwood, California.”

Hilton, 26, said in a statement: “This is an important point in my life and I need to take responsibility for my actions. In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make.

“Although I am scared, I am ready to begin my jail sentence.”

According to TMZ.com Hutton picked Hilton up from her parents’ house at 10.30pm (0530 GMT this morning) and drove to her to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

She surrendered her freedom there and was taken to the jail in Lynwood.

Earlier in the evening Hilton had attended the MTV Movie Awards, where she was the butt of many comedians’ jokes.

Last year, PinkNews reported how Hilton had been given a restraining order and told to stay 100 yards away from an events producer.
