With the International Day Against Homophobia fast approaching on May 17th, preparations have been taking place for 80 events in Britain.

Four students have won a competition after designing posters to celebrate LGBT History Month and the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO.)

Tracy Smith, Jillian Burr, Patricia Ofuno and Annel Christopher, all from the University of the Arts, designed four posters which won the acclaim of judges.

The posters will be revealed at the main IDAHO-UK event on May 17th at the University of the Arts London College of Fashion.

Everyone attending will receive prints of the posters and food and drink will be provided.

The entertainment will be provided by rising comedy star, Zoe Lyons.

As well as speakers, there will be news of IDAHO events around the world, and a message of greeting from Louis-Georges Tin, the founder of the International Day Against Homophobia.

One of the main themes of this year’s IDAHO campaign is “No to homophobia, yes to education.”

In Manchester, the Lesbian and Gay Foundation has taken this message on board and is embarking on a three year initiative to support schools in with resources, training and advice on homophobia and sexuality.

Cardiff Mardi Gras Organisers are encouraging photos, drawings, painting and digital camera images to highlight “where you feel safe in your sexuality.”

GALHA (Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association) will be hosting a panel discussion following the “scare-mongering and misinformation about books aimed at primary school pupils that deal honestly with gay issues, such as same-sex parents or gay youth.”

In France, there will be several initiatives and interactive events at Paris train stations involving pupils teachers, pop singers artists, human rights and LGBT Organisations around the issues of homophobic and transphobic bullying. I

Meanwhile in Lebanon, graphic designers and design students have been asked to depict homophobia and the fight against it.

The GALHA panel discussion will be held at 7.30 on Friday May 18th, at Conway Hall, Holborn. Contact Cliff James at [email protected] for more details.
