With International Day Against Homophobia approaching Dyfed-Powys police are keen to tackle homophobia in their area.

They are currently running a pilot scheme using Hate Crime Support Officers (HCSO) to support victims of hate crime in the Powys area.

This will hopefully be extended in the future to the other counties they police; Carmarthenshire, Cerdigion and Pembrokeshire.

These HCSO have received additional training to support police officers tackling hate crime.

The HCSO will ensure the police response to hate crime meets a consistently high standard and will also try to involve the help of other agencies.

An important part of the HCSO role will be to reduce the chance of hate crime victims being victims in the future.

Dyfed-Powys police would like to appeal to anyone who has been the victim of homophobia to get in touch with them.

Call 999 for emergencies or 0845 330 20004 for the police. The Dyfed-Powys police hold a quarterly LGBT forum to establish a good relationship with members of the community.
