Men and women involved in homophobic attack
10:20 AM — Two brothers were set upon by a gang of men and women, punched, kicked and knocked to the ground in a homophobic attack in County Durham.The attack happened in the village of Spennymoor in the early house of Monday morning.The brothers, aged 26 and 21, were on their way home from a nightclub when they passed the Victoria Inn, the BBC reports.
Sir Ian to launch LGBT History Month 3
10:05 AM — Actor and activist Sir Ian McKellen will be the featured speaker at the launch of LGBT History Month next month.The launch will form part of the annual Schools Out conference, on Saturday 3rd February at the Drill Hall theatre in London.Schools Out is one of the oldest gay campaigning groups in the UK.

Copenhagen looks to Outgames in 2009
3:41 PM — Despite the financially disappointing Montreal Outgames, plans for the 2009 event in Copenhagen are looking positive.Outgames is a sports, cultural and human rights event primarily for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals.The second event will be the largest international sports and cultural event ever held on Danish soil.
ENDA on the agenda as Congress returns to work

1:53 PM — A politician in a remote Russian republic is to introduce a bill recognising same-sex partnerships.Edward Murzin, a member of the Bashkir State Assembly, has introduced the bill.He told the Interfax news agency that he wanted to uphold the Russian constitution, which bars discrimination of any kind.
Mexican bishop slams same-sex unions
1:21 PM — A northern Mexican bishop has criticised the approval of a bill to recognize gay unions in the Mexican state of Coahuila.It is the second such measure in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation.According to the Associated Press, Roman Catholic Bishop Alonso Gerardo Garza said the law was an attack on the institution of marriage.

Scottish government backs hate crimes bill 74
11:20 AM — Ministers, MSPs, police chiefs, the Equality and Human Rights Commission and gay rights activists have welcomed the announcement that the government in Scotland will support an extension of the country's hate crimes legislation to protect LGBT people and the disabled.The Sentencing of Offences Aggravated by Prejudice (Scotland) Bill was proposed by Patrick Harvie, a Scottish Green MSP.It will bring Scotland into line with England and Wales.

11:02 AM — A postman who is on the NHS waiting list for gender reassignment surgery has been convicted of hiding and dumping post.43-year-old Michael Pearson, from Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, told Dewsbury Magistrates Court that gangs of youths were victimising him during his postal round in Birstall, throwing stones at him and taunting him about his effeminate appearance.
Italian gays protest at the Vatican 2
10:32 AM — A group of around 150 protesters attended a rally in St Peters Square on Saturday to protest against the anti-gay stance of Pope Benedict XVI.The protest, organised by gay rights group Arcigay, was held on the ninth anniversary of the suicide of writer Alfredo Ormando.The protesters carried banners calling on the Italian government to legalise gay unions.

Spanish voters will go to the polls in March 5

While the campaign proper runs for the two weeks leading up to the poll, in effect political parties have been electioneering for months.While some polls show the incumbent Socialists a few points ahead of their main conservative rivals Paritdo Popular, most have them tied.
New Jersey legislates against gay bullying
10:10 AM — A bill that would strengthen current laws against hate crimes and bullying has been passed to the New Jersey General Assembly.The bill was sponsored by Puerto Rican Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo."Acts of hatred or violence against a person - especially a child - cannot be tolerated in our state in this day and age," said Caraballo told the New Jersey Politicker .
