Shamed TV actor Isaiah Washington has signalled his desire to put the controversy surrounding his use of the word ‘faggot’ behind him by co-operating with Gay, Lesbian Straight Education Network.

Washington, one of the stars of the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has apologised for using homophobic language to refer to his co-star TR Knight.

He met with representatives of GLSEN yesterday in Los Angeles.

The meeting was arranged by TV network ABC in an attempt to put to rest an ongoing story that has threatened the popularity of the series.

The meeting came at the start of GLSEN’s “No Name-Calling Week,” an event that focuses on the use of homophobic language in schools.

Kevin Jennings, executive director of GLSEN met with Washington and was pleased with the outcome.

“As a parent himself, Isaiah Washington seemed to particularly appreciate the impact these words have on young people in schools and expressed an interest in becoming an ally in GLSEN ‘s effort to educate young people about the negative impact of name-calling and bullying.”

“GLSEN’s research shows that name-calling is a significant barrier to learning, and this week is a particularly appropriate time for new allies to join the effort,” Jennings added.

GLSEN is hopeful that Isaiah Washington has come to a deeper understanding of the power of words, especially as we launch “No Name-Calling Week” in schools across the country.”
