A 43-year-old man has been charged with murder after police in Washington DC found the body of a transsexual woman in an apartment in the city.

The victim has been identified as Grafton Lee Person, 42.

Police arrested the suspect, Preston Logan, after he was caught shoplifting at a 7-Eleven at 8:30am last Saturday.

He was being held at a police station when officers searched his apartment.

They discoved the body of Person, who was known to the Washington transgender community as Diamond Person.

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Unit said that Person was a male-to-female transsexual.

Evidence found by police at the apartment led them to suspect that Logan beat his victim over the head with a hammer, choked her and placed a plastic bag over the victim’s head, NBC.com reports.

No motive for the murder has been revealed.

Logan is due for a preliminary hearing later this month. He was not granted bail.
