Penelope Cruz has reacted to speculation that her close relationship with fellow actress Salma Hayek is more than just platonic.

During an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday, the Spanish film star, who used to be romantically involved with Tom Cruise, spoke about reports of a gay relationship with Hayek.

Rumours had been fuelled by a raunchy photoshoot the two actresses did for US magazine Interview. In one picture Cruz is shown grabbing Hayek’s buttocks.

She defended the photos on the show, telling host David Letterman, “You know what they’ve been saying because of that picture? We are like sisters and we have some sense of humour.”

“We did that in front of 100 photographers and the story now is that apparently we are lovers. I’m sorry to say, that is not the case!”

Cruz, 32, appeared with Tom Cruise in the 2001 film, Vanilla Sky, and they had a three year relationship.

She has described Hayek, 40, as her best friend. The pair co-starred in the film Bandidas together last year.
