Police are appealing for information after a gay man became the victim of a mindless homophobic arson attack at his home.

The victim, who has requested not to be identified, was returning home when he heard a smashing sound.

Arriving at his doorstep, he found a fire blazing on his doorstep. Subsequent forensic examination found the fire had been deliberately started using what appears to be a crude device with accelerant within a glass bottle and newspaper.

Fortunately no significant damage was caused and the fire was extinguished by the victim.

Police believe that the attack, which happened on a block of flats in Harmsworth Crescent, Hangleton, Hove, to be an act of anti-gay violence.

Police are appealing for information and say that the attack could have had far greater consequences.

The offence happened at approximately 6.30pm on Tuesday 7th November. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You can also contact Sussex Police via the GAYDAR website, www.gaydar.co.uk/villagepolicing
