It is an important day for gay rights in the USA as along with the mid-term elections, referendums are also being held on important LGBT matters such as same sex marriage and legal protections.

Voters in Idaho, Colorado, South Dakota South Carolina, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Virginia will have the opportunity to improve or limit gay rights in votes taking place today.

In Idaho, Arizona, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Virginia residents will vote on laws defining marriage as only between a man and woman.

Analysts have warned that the wording of the votes in Wisconsin and Virginia will have implications for unmarried straight couples if approved.

Meanwhile South Dakota and South Carolina will decide on the right to legal protections for gay families.

It comes after the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that same sex couples should be given the same rights as heterosexual people, while New York, Washington, and California recently rejected gay marriage laws.
