PinkNews.co.uk was named Publication of the Year at the Stonewall Awards last week.

The site was described by the host Sir Ian McKellen as “the only one-stop shop for all news with a gay slant” at the charity’s inaugural awards ceremony inside the Royal Academy of Arts.

PinkNews.co.uk Online Editor Marc Shoffman praised the site’s founder Benjamin Cohen, who joined him to collect the award, and called on the community to help continue the fight for “equality, justice and fair representation.”

The website beat Diva magazine, The Guardian, The Economist and The Independent to receive the accolade.

Awarding the prize, Sir Ian, one of Stonewall’s co-founders said: “The judges praised one publication in particular for making such a significant impact since their launch a little over 12 months ago.

“They described this publication as ‘the only one-stop shop for all news with a gay slant’ and admired their knack for pitching pink stories to the mainstream media.

“Our winner is the most popular – and most widely-read – gay news site on the internet and the largest gay news organisation in Europe, even though it only launched in 2005.”

Sponsored by Barclays, the awards celebrate the positive contributions made by individuals and organisations – both gay and straight – to the lives of gay people in Britain.

Publication of the Year went to Sarah Waters, for her book ‘The Night Watch’ won Writer of the Year; Employer of the Year went to Staffordshire Police while the Mail on Sunday’s Jonathan Oliver was named Journalist of The Year.

In categories voted by Stonewall supporters, Bully of the Year went to Radio1 DJ Chris Moyles, Hero was Ms Dobrowski and the Albert Kennedy Trust was named as Community Group of the Year.

In other awards, Channel 4 drama Sugar Rush received Broadcast of the Year, Torchwood star John Barrowman was named Entertainer of the Year and Baroness Ashton, Constitutional Affairs Minister, received the award for Politician of the Year.
