Spanish students to learn gay respect

Primary and secondary school student in Spain are to be given lessons on homophobic behaviour and gay families amid increased attacks and discrimination against the LGBT community.

It comes a year after Spain implemented gay marriage laws, and now the Education Ministry wants to teach pupils that discrimination based on sexual orientation is wrong.

Pupils will be taught about same sex households and the negative effects of homophobic behaviour, El Pais reports, in an effort to curb statistics from gay groups such as in Barcelona where it is claimed that attacks against gay people have increased.

A recent survey by Madrid gay group Cogam found that a third of male students believe discriminating against the gay community is right.

The idea is opposed by conservative Christian groups but the government sees it as vital in ensuring full equality for gays and lesbians.
