The race for the Senate vote in New York is entering “swampy territory” after Republican candidate John Spencer reportedly called Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton a lesbian.

Mr Spencer has been criticised by women’s groups after allegedly commenting about the former First Lady’s appearance, accusing her of having plastic surgery and questioning Mrs Clinton’s sexuality.

Mrs Clinton retorted by criticising Mr Spencer for having nothing positive to say about issues and instead derailing into “some pretty swampy territory.”

Phil Reisman,, a columnist for The Journal News claims that Mr Spencer told him before a debate between the candidates, “‘Well, you know me, words slip out, but I won’t call her a lesbian or anything.”

Mr Spencer has since denied the remarks and has apologised for causing any offence.

The Congressional elections take place on November 7 2006.
